DailyKenn.com — Think twice before you falsely accuse someone of being a racist.
The owners of Gibson's Bakery in Oberlin, Ohio didn't take kindly accusations of racism. Three black students were snagged shoplifting which ignited false claims of racism among students at nearby Oberlin College.
Oberlin professors and deans joined the student protests -- in some cases handing out fliers that read, "DON'T BUY." "This is a RACIST establishment with a LONG ACCOUNT of RACIAL PROFILING and DISCRIMINATION," the flier said, according to the 2017 lawsuit. [source]
After the Ohio Supreme Court ruled on August 30 not to take up the college's appeal of a lower court ruling that upheld a judgment against Oberlin, Oberlin College and Conservatory said it would pay a $36.59 million judgment to Gibson Bakery.
Takeaway...
Be cautious before smearing someone with pejoratives and hate speech such as "racist" or neologisms that end in "phobe".
