Suspect kills cop, self, reports say

WARM SPRINGS, Ga. — Five days stood between two meetings of the same two men. The first ended with an arrest. The second ended with a Warm Springs police sergeant dead in his cruiser.

On Sept. 1, 2026, at about 11:57 p.m., Sgt. Chris Fisher, 36, had finished an unrelated traffic stop and was still on duty in his patrol car at a parking lot in Warm Springs, Georgia. A black 2026 Chevrolet Silverado stopped beside him. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the driver, Jimmy Lee Steverson, 23, of Warm Springs, fired multiple shots into the patrol vehicle, striking Fisher, then fled. Fisher was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

That night was not their first contact.

Fisher had stopped Steverson on Aug. 27 after smelling marijuana coming from Steverson’s vehicle. Video released later showed the stop turning into a fight. Steverson grew uncooperative. The two struggled on the ground. Fisher used a Taser and eventually placed him in handcuffs. Court records list charges that included marijuana possession, possessing a firearm during the commission of a crime, and obstruction. Steverson posted a $10,000 bond and left jail.

Fisher’s time in Warm Springs had been brief. He joined the city’s police department in May 2026 and was promoted to sergeant in July. He had spent five years in the Army and later worked as a deputy in Fayette, Meriwether and Heard counties. He was a husband and the father of two children.

After the shooting, the GBI issued a Blue Alert. The hunt moved out of Georgia. On Sept. 2, at about 11:39 a.m., deputies with the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office stopped a car in Anderson, South Carolina. Steverson was a passenger. Officers found him injured from what they described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital there and later pronounced dead.

The GBI is investigating at the request of the Warm Springs Police Department. Officials have not announced a motive. Local, state and federal agencies helped with the search and the case file. With both men dead, the work now sits with investigators rather than a jury.
