CHICAGO, Illinois — A holiday weekend that marked the unofficial end of summer turned deadly in Chicago, with eight people shot dead and about 30 others wounded in shootings across the city. A ninth homicide occurred Monday afternoon when a CTA Red Line passenger was shoved from a moving train [source].

Chicago police said 30 separate shooting incidents were reported between Friday evening, Sept. 4, and early Tuesday, Sept. 8. At least five teenagers were among those wounded. Most of the shootings occurred on the South and West sides.

The weekend's first fatal shooting happened Friday night in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood. Police said Josh Washington, 28, became involved in an argument and was shot in the abdomen. He managed to get to a hospital but later died from his injuries.

A second fatal shooting occurred early Saturday in West Englewood. Enderson Linares, 29, was shot by two people who then fled in a sedan, according to police. Linares was pronounced dead at the scene.

Other fatal shootings were reported during the weekend, including the death of Crystal Salter, who was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside a home early Sunday. A 20-year-old man, Jerome Kirk, was also fatally shot Sunday while sitting inside a vehicle. Another man, 26, was killed later that evening.

The holiday weekend's shooting toll was lower than last year's, when Chicago recorded nine shooting deaths and 52 people wounded. Police said the number of shooting victims this year represented a substantial decline from the same holiday period in 2025.

A separate death Monday added to the overall holiday homicide count. Police said a passenger was shoved from a moving Chicago Transit Authority Red Line train and died. That incident was not included among the shooting deaths.

By Tuesday, detectives were still working to determine what led to the individual shootings and identify those responsible. The cases remained under investigation.
