How police describe the case
Investigators say the dispute was between two shooters. The girl walked into the path of that exchange. Manassas Police Chief Doug Keen later called her an innocent bystander.
Officers treated one of the wounded men as a victim at first. That man, Tasheem Rashad Douglas, 21, of Prince William County, was later charged. He remains in custody and was treated at a Fairfax hospital. Police say they believe his shot killed the teenager.
Douglas faces second-degree murder, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
What is known about the accused
Court records and the Prince William County commonwealth’s attorney’s office show Douglas is a convicted felon. On the night of the shooting he was free on bond and facing other cases, including firearm and ammunition charges. Earlier arrests listed by prosecutors include assault, brandishing a firearm, larceny and a reported probation issue.
Police recovered a weapon and are checking whether it ties to the case. No public motive has been announced. Keen said detectives expect to establish one.
The victim
Police did not immediately release the girl’s name, citing her age and family wishes. Later local reports identified her as Ashley Intihar, 16, a student at Patriot High School in Nokesville, Virginia. The school principal notified staff and families that a student had been killed.
What remains open
A second shooter has not been arrested. Keen said that person is a priority and that detectives also want to know whether anyone else took part. Police asked people who were downtown that night to share photos, video or tips, even footage that seems ordinary.
