DailyKenn.com — A Bay Area elementary school, where just 4% of students are proficient in math and 12% in English, allocated $250,000 to implement a 'Woke Kindergarten' program. Despite its lofty goals, the program's impact has been controversial, with literacy and numeracy rates plummeting among students.

The 'Woke Kindergarten' initiative describes itself as an 'abolitionist early learning ecosystem,' aiming to dismantle white supremacy and combat racism and oppression within the education system. However, the outcomes tell a different story.

Following the investment of federal funds into the program, Glassbrook Elementary in Hayward witnessed a significant decline in academic performance. Numeracy levels dropped to a mere 4%, while literacy rates fell to 12%. These scores, recorded last Spring, marked a 4 percentage point decrease in each category compared to previous years.

Furthermore, despite the program's intentions, the school remains classified as one of the lowest-performing institutions on the Comprehensive School Improvement list. Additionally, attendance rates have not improved since the introduction of the 'Woke Kindergarten' program.

The philosophy of 'abolitionist education' promoted by Woke Kindergarten challenges the traditional education system, suggesting that it is irredeemably entrenched in racism and oppressive structures. Instead of reform, proponents advocate for a complete overhaul of the system.

The program's overtly political stance is evident on its social media platforms, which feature content advocating for the abolition of police, expressing anti-Israel sentiments, and even proposing the abolition of currency. Lessons include discussions on defunding the Israeli military and rebuilding Palestine, as well as introducing children to 'liberatory vocabulary.'

Woke Kindergarten was founded by non-binary educator Akiea 'Ki' Gross, who uses they/them pronouns. Gross's left-leaning views, including envisioning a world without the US and Israel, are reflected in the program's curriculum and messaging.

Despite its noble intentions, the 'Woke Kindergarten' program has sparked controversy and failed to produce the desired academic outcomes, raising questions about its effectiveness and appropriateness within the education system.
