DailyKenn.com — Three men in Liverpool were convicted of assault motivated by religious prejudice.

On March 20, 2023, Amin Mohmed (24), Mohammed Patel (20), and Faruq Patel (19) attacked several individuals in Liverpool city center. Witnesses reported the men targeted victims based on their perceived religion.

The incident began when Edris Nosrati, a Muslim bystander, observed the group assaulting another man. He intervened, fearing the attackers might be extremists due to their comments. However, the men dismissed him.

Nosrati later witnessed the group confront Gary Bohanna, who identified himself as Christian. The attackers punched him twice, breaking his glasses and causing injury.

The group then encountered Paul Lynch and his girlfriend. Footage captured by Faruq Patel showed Mohmed striking Lynch with significant force. While no explicitly religious remarks were made during this assault, Faruq Patel can be heard laughing in the video.

Police apprehended the men after a struggle with Nosrati, who helped detain Faruq Patel. Both Bohanna and Lynch received medical treatment for their injuries.

All three defendants initially denied wrongdoing. Mohmed and Mohammed Patel later admitted to targeting victims based on their perceived lack of Muslim faith. Faruq Patel claimed self-defense and intoxication but admitted to filming the assault for amusement.

The judge acknowledged the possibility that the group may have been subjected to prior racist abuse. However, she condemned their violent actions and the targeting of innocent bystanders.

Mohmed received a 42-week prison sentence, while Mohammed Patel and Faruq Patel were sentenced to 42 weeks and 18 weeks, respectively, in a young offenders institution.

This rewrite removes phrases like "drunken yobs," "shocking incident," and "hero," which can be seen as subjective. It also avoids characterizing the defendants as terrorists and focuses on the details of the assaults and the court proceedings.
