DailyKenn.com — Steven Cotner, 23, was fatally shot in Calumnet City, IL.
Calumnet City is a suburb of Chicago with a population that is 71.3 percent black and 9.1 percent non-Hispanic white [source].
It is part of the metropolitan area that includes Gary, IN.
Calumet City police were searching for the gunmen responsible for the fatal shooting of a man who was defending his sister during a robbery.
The victim and his sister Allison Cotner—who was assaulted in the incident—were both pizza delivery drivers.
“He pointed the gun at me and said, ‘Give me the money!’” recalled Allison. “I told him, ‘I don’t have any money.’”
Steven and Allison were working for Windy City Pizza Works in Calumet City on Thursday night when they were called to make a delivery around 8 p.m. What they didn’t know was that the call was a setup for an armed robbery.
“I begged him, ‘Please don’t shoot me! I just told you I don’t have any money!’” Allison said.
Within moments, two teens—dressed entirely in black, with only their eyes visible—confronted Allison with guns drawn. One of them struck her in the left eye with the grip of his gun, leaving her with bruises and needing stitches.
Steven quickly intervened to defend her.
“I heard two gunshots, and they killed my brother for no reason,” Allison said. “He was just an innocent soul. They didn’t have to do that to him.”
The attackers fled without taking any money. According to Allison, her brother always accompanied her on deliveries to protect her. Despite being younger, Steven was always her protector.
The siblings shared their earnings and both still lived at home. Steven, 23, was saving up to get a place of his own.
“I just want him back,” Allison said tearfully.
The Cotner family, from Hammond, Indiana, is tight-knit, with Steven being the fifth of six children.
“He would do anything to protect us,” said Candace Cotner, their sister. “He lost his life over nothing. They didn’t get any money, nothing. They just took his life for no reason.”
The incident underscores the disparate natures of cultures in America. The one culture stresses work to achieve success while the other is immersed in violent crime, stealing from those who are productive.
What's more, the calloused nature of the homicide suggests inherent psychopathy, narcissism, and entitlement that seem to permeate America's urban jungles.
