Around 1:20 a.m. on a Saturday, Grant and a woman arrive at a Love’s travel station in a black Mustang. The two engage in a violent argument, during which Grant steps out of the car from the passenger seat and moves to the driver's side. He places a black handgun on the vehicle’s hood and forces the woman out of the driver’s seat. Grant then physically assaults her, throwing her against the car and onto the ground.
Off-duty Corrections Officer Brad McNew, who had just completed his shift, hears the commotion and approaches to check on the woman. Grant confronts McNew, telling him it’s a “family matter” before continuing to attack the woman. He then points the gun at McNew.
Eventually, Grant and the woman get back into the car. As they drive away, Grant hangs out of the window, firing the gun and hitting McNew. The suspect flees the scene and a nationwide manhunt begins.
McNew is transported to a local hospital, where he dies from his injuries. Surveillance footage of the incident is released on social media. Sheriff T.K. Waters describes McNew’s intervention as the “right thing to do” and expresses anger at Grant’s actions.
Following a manhunt, Grant is arrested and faces multiple charges, including murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, aggravated assault with a firearm, and discharging a firearm in public.
Grant has a history of violent felonies, including previous convictions for assaulting an officer, reports say.
