DailyKenn.com — Bryce Gerlach, 18, was fatally shot while shielding others from gunfire that erupted at a fall festival in New Albany, IN.

Gerlach was shot when at least two different groups engaged in a violent argument.

The story...

The shooting starts just before 10 p.m. on a Saturday near festival rides  at the Harvest Homecoming Festival in New Albany, IN. Police report that "multiple shooters" are likely firing from different directions, hitting innocent bystanders.

New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey states that all victims in the incident appear unrelated to the dispute that triggers the gunfire. He describes the persons of interest as black males in their teens and early 20s, though no arrests have been made. The suspects, who flee the scene, are described as a danger to the public due to the reckless nature of their actions.

New Albany Mayor Jeff Gahan condemns the violence, calling the gunfire at a family festival "heartbreaking and tragic," urging the nation to come together to prevent such incidents.

Along with the death of Gerlach, two other individuals, Brendan Hagan and a 42-year-old woman, are injured. Hagan is with his girlfriend and 10-month-old son when he hears a group of teens arguing before shots ring out. He is struck in the leg and, with the help of a tourniquet, is hospitalized in serious condition. The woman, hit in her lower extremities, is treated and released.

Harvest Homecoming events on Sunday are canceled following the tragedy. Gerlach, a high school football player, was set to play his final home game on Friday. His father, devastated by the loss, emphasizes that "evil will not win," expressing hope that good and love will prevail.

South Harrison Community School Corporation Superintendent Mark Eastridge says the community is grappling with Gerlach’s death, noting the senseless nature of the violence that claimed the teen's life.
