BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A 28-year-old man has been charged with capital murder in the shooting death of 32-year-old Devin Wayne Hughes in Birmingham’s Ensley neighborhood. The incident occurred early on July 23, 2025, when Hughes was found shot to death inside a crashed vehicle in the front yard of a home in the 4100 block of Avenue L.

Police identified the suspect as Cameron Keyshawn Jackson of Quinton, Alabama. Authorities said Hughes, an Albertville resident, was at a residence in the 1300 block of 42nd Street Ensley with two passengers when Jackson allegedly fired shots into Hughes’ vehicle as he attempted to drive away. Hughes was pronounced dead at the scene around 3:30 a.m. The motive for the shooting has not been disclosed.

Following the incident, police detained multiple individuals for questioning and executed a search warrant at the residence, recovering firearms. Jackson was taken into custody within hours and held in Birmingham City Jail on a 48-hour felony extension before the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office issued the capital murder warrant on July 26, 2025. The investigation remains ongoing.
