TOPEKA, Kan. — Destiny "Dustin" C. Voss, a 28-year-old Topeka man and Navy veteran, was fatally shot on July 6, 2025, marking the city’s ninth homicide of the year. The shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m. Topeka police responded to a local hospital where Voss, suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

On Aug. 6, 2025, Topeka police arrested 18-year-old Avant Chambers in connection with Voss’ death. Chambers was charged with first-degree murder, attempted aggravated robbery, two counts of criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied dwelling, criminal discharge of a firearm into an occupied vehicle, distribution or possession with intent to distribute marijuana, and unlawful use of a communication facility. Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay announced the charges on Aug. 8, and Chambers was held on a $1 million bond. The investigation remains ongoing, with police seeking additional information from the public.  

Voss, born Feb. 13, 1997, to James Norton and Aimee Voss, was known for his vibrant personality, quick wit, and dedication to his community. After serving in the U.S. Navy starting in 2017, he pursued a career in security, reflecting his commitment to protecting others. He was remembered for his compassion and volunteer efforts throughout Topeka.
