LAGRANGE, Ga. (AP) — A LaGrange man has been charged with murder following a suspected road rage shooting on Interstate 85 in Troup County, authorities said.
Nytorian Allen, 23, was arrested and charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime after the deadly encounter between LaGrange and West Point on July 30.
At approximately 4:02 p.m., deputies with the Troup County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a possible vehicle accident with injuries near Mile Marker 11 on I-85. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a single vehicle resting in the median. The driver, later identified as Richard Hawk, 64, of Texas, was found unresponsive and bleeding inside.
Emergency personnel removed Hawk from the vehicle and transported him by ambulance to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center. It was during this process that responders discovered what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head. Hawk was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
According to investigators, a witness reported aggressive driving and road rage behavior between two vehicles on the interstate. The witness contacted the West Point Police Department and provided a description and license plate number of the suspect’s vehicle.
Officers with the West Point Police Department located the vehicle within city limits, and Troup County investigators responded to the scene. The suspect and his vehicle were taken into custody without incident.
Allen was later booked at the Troup County Jail and formally charged. Authorities have not released details on what may have provoked the shooting or whether the suspect and victim knew each other.
Due to the proximity of the arrest, West Point Elementary School was briefly placed on lockdown as a precaution. The school has since resumed normal operations. [source]
