Terry Eugene Barrett Jr., 47, died Monday, July 28, 2025, at a hospital after suffering a gunshot wound at an apartment in the 2200 block of Stanton Avenue, according to police. Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 11:30 p.m. and found Barrett wounded at the scene. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The incident was described by investigators as a targeted altercation with no broader threat to the neighborhood. A handgun was recovered at the scene, and evidence pointed to a personal dispute as the motive.
Amarianna Findley-Murry, 19, of Des Moines, was arrested hours after the shooting and charged with possession of a dangerous weapon by a prohibited person, a serious misdemeanor. Authorities allege Findley-Murry fired the shot that struck Barrett during the argument. She was being held pending further charges as detectives continue to build the case.
Barrett, born March 8, 1978, in Moline, Illinois, was remembered by family and friends as a hardworking and beloved figure. He had worked at Kone Spares and was known for his kindness and reliability. His obituary highlighted the profound loss felt by those close to him, noting that "his absence leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him."
Funeral services were held under the care of Iles Dunn's Chapel in Des Moines. In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorial contributions to support causes aligned with Barrett's memory, though specific designations were not detailed.
