Bionca Ellis, 34, faces life in prison when she is sentenced Oct. 27 by Common Pleas Judge John Russo, who will decide whether she is eligible for parole. The weeklong trial focused on whether Ellis' long history of schizophrenia rendered her legally insane at the time of the attack, but jurors rejected her not guilty by reason of insanity plea after deliberating for about two days.
Ellis was found guilty on nine counts, including aggravated murder, two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of felonious assault, one count of child endangering and one count of aggravated theft. Prosecutors said the June 3, 2024, assault at a Giant Eagle in North Olmsted was unprovoked and random. Ellis stole two knives from a nearby thrift store before entering the supermarket, where she spotted Julian Wood and his mother, Margot Wood, 37, near the front. She followed them as they paid for groceries and headed to their vehicle.
As Margot loaded bags into the car, Ellis rushed at them and stabbed Julian multiple times in the face and neck while he sat strapped in a shopping cart, witnesses and court testimony showed. The attack lasted less than five seconds. Margot tried to pull her son free and was stabbed in the shoulder. Julian died at a hospital despite emergency efforts. Ellis walked away calmly toward a nearby road, still holding a knife, until police arrested her without resistance.
During the trial, which began Oct. 7, prosecutors and defense experts agreed Ellis has schizophrenia but clashed over whether it prevented her from knowing right from wrong. The prosecution's psychiatrist testified that Ellis understood the wrongfulness of her actions based on interviews, while the defense argued her severe delusions made her legally insane. Ellis' attorneys conceded she committed the acts but urged acquittal on insanity grounds. Margot Wood testified she had no prior connection to Ellis and described the assault as sudden and terrifying.
Ellis has been held on $5 million bond since her indictment in June 2024. Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O'Malley called the verdict a measure of justice for the family, expressing continued prayers for their healing.
