Vadym Davydenko, from Kyiv, had flown into the country on Sunday and was placed in a Tusla-contracted apartment at the Grattan Wood complex in Donaghmede, Dublin 13. The unit housed four unaccompanied minors seeking international protection, with 24-hour staff support. Gardaí were called to the scene shortly after 11 a.m. following reports of a violent altercation involving a knife. Davydenko suffered multiple stab wounds to his head, chest and eyes and was pronounced dead at the apartment despite emergency efforts.

A teenage suspect, also 17 and a foreign national from Somalia residing at the same facility, sustained non-life-threatening injuries to his hand during the incident and was hospitalized. He was arrested Friday on suspicion of murder and is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Dublin Garda station. Authorities described the attack as frenzied and confirmed a post-mortem examination on Davydenko has been completed. The scene remains preserved for forensic analysis.

A female staff member also received minor injuries and was treated at a hospital. Investigators are probing all circumstances of the stabbing, which occurred less than a week after Davydenko's arrival via Poland. Fr. Serhii Danilov, who leads the newly established Ukrainian Orthodox Parish, prayed for the family, noting their hopes for a better life shattered by the tragedy.

Tusla, Ireland's Child and Family Agency, described the apartment as an unregulated private emergency placement amid a nationwide shortage of residential spaces for minors. The facility cared for separated youth fleeing persecution or unsafe returns to their home countries. The Children's Rights Alliance called the killing a rare but devastating event, highlighting vulnerabilities for unaccompanied teens avoiding conscription in Ukraine.

Ukrainian advocacy groups, including Ukrainians Helping Ukrainians and the Association of Ukrainians in the Republic of Ireland, expressed shock and demanded an urgent independent review of Tusla's safety protocols for minors in state care. "This has shaken the entire Ukrainian community in Ireland," one group stated, raising concerns about accommodations for children escaping war.
