Cincinnati Woman Killed in Deadly Russian Roulette Game, Suspect Charged With Murder
CINCINNATI (DailyKenn.com) — A 23-year-old woman died from a gunshot wound to the chest during a card game that turned fatal when a friend allegedly suggested playing Russian roulette, authorities said.
Rachel Counts was pronounced dead at the scene after first responders attempted life-saving measures at a home on Kings Run Court in the city's Winton Hills neighborhood. The incident occurred around 10:45 p.m. on Oct. 5, when officers responded to reports of a shooting.
Prosecutors allege that Counts was playing cards with several others, including 23-year-old Omarion Horne, when Horne pulled a revolver from his pocket. He is accused of removing all but one bullet from the chamber, pointing the gun at his own head and declaring, "Let's play Russian roulette." Horne then allegedly turned the weapon toward Counts and pulled the trigger, firing the single live round that struck her in the chest.
Horne, who was arrested the following day, faces a murder charge and is being held in the Hamilton County Justice Center on $1 million bond. He broke down in tears during his Oct. 10 arraignment as prosecutors detailed the allegations. He is scheduled to return to court later this month.
Police have not disclosed whether Counts and Horne were romantically involved or the exact relationship between them, but investigators described the shooting as a senseless act of violence stemming from the ill-fated game. The homicide unit continues to probe the circumstances, urging anyone with information to contact detectives at 513-352-3542.
Counts' death has been added to records of gun violence victims in the region, highlighting ongoing concerns about firearm-related incidents in urban areas.
