OMAHA, Neb. — A 34-year-old Omaha man was fatally shot in his home during a botched marijuana deal that turned violent, leaving his family grappling with grief and demands for justice as authorities secured the arrest of a 22-year-old suspect.

Joshua Seth Perrin, a Westside High School graduate and aspiring engineer known for his love of video games, Star Wars and his pets, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2025, after being gunned down near the front of his residence in the Benson neighborhood. The incident unfolded around 8:20 p.m. near 56th and Hamilton streets, where Perrin had answered a knock at the door.

According to court documents, Perrin had arranged to sell a pound of marijuana to Ve'Angelo Moore and an unidentified accomplice. What began as a routine transaction quickly escalated into an argument over payment and the quality of the drugs. Witnesses told investigators that Moore, frustrated with the deal, drew a handgun and pistol-whipped Perrin's roommate three times during a brief struggle inside the home. Perrin intervened to protect his roommate, leading to a chaotic scuffle that ended with a single gunshot. Perrin's body was discovered at the base of a staircase by responding officers, who rushed him to Nebraska Medicine, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Perrin's roommate, who suffered minor injuries from the assault, provided key details to detectives, describing the intruders' aggressive entry and the rapid deterioration of the encounter. Another witness, who had helped set up the buy, corroborated the account, stating Moore initiated the confrontation without provocation. No additional suspects have been named, though police believe the second man fled the scene.

Omaha police Homicide Unit detectives moved swiftly, identifying Perrin the following day and issuing a warrant for Moore, whom they described as armed and dangerous. On Nov. 18, officers apprehended Moore without incident near 16th and Farnam streets in downtown Omaha. He was booked into Douglas County Jail on charges including first-degree murder—a crime punishable by life in prison—along with two counts of use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, second-degree assault and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

During Moore's initial court appearance Thursday, Nov. 20, prosecutors argued against bail, citing the premeditated nature of the killing and Moore's flight risk. Douglas County Judge makes the call to deny bond, scheduling a preliminary hearing for Jan. 6, 2026. Moore, who has a prior criminal history including prohibited weapons possession, did not enter a plea.

Perrin's parents, Shane and Michelle Perrin, have been vocal in their anguish, describing their son as a kind-hearted individual who treated friends like family and doted on his 16-year-old cat, Musashi. "My soul was ripped from my body," Michelle Perrin said, echoing the raw devastation felt by those who knew him. The family launched an online fundraiser that has raised over $7,000 to cover funeral expenses, legal fees and outstanding debts, while urging the community to support the investigation. Neighbors in the tight-knit Benson area expressed shock over the violence in their midst, with one longtime resident noting the rarity of such brazen home invasions. Omaha police continue to canvass for surveillance footage and tips, emphasizing that the case remains active.

As the city mourns a life cut short, Perrin's loved ones hold out hope for swift accountability, vowing to honor his memory through advocacy for safer streets.
