Mora Gerety, a third-grader at Washington Elementary School and an active participant in local arts programs, died Tuesday evening after the collision at West Ada Street and Harrison Boulevard. The Ada County Coroner's Office ruled her death an accident caused by multiple blunt force injuries. She was pronounced dead at 6:55 p.m. at St. Luke's Boise Medical Center, where paramedics had rushed her following the 4:30 p.m. crash.

According to the Boise Police Department, Gerety was walking westbound on Ada Street toward the unmarked crosswalk when she entered the intersection. At the same time, 42-year-old Elvin Ramos-Caballero, driving a pickup truck westbound on Ada, stopped at the intersection before attempting a right turn onto Harrison Boulevard. The truck struck Gerety as both entered the crosswalk area, police said. There were no indications of impairment or excessive speed by the driver, who remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Harrison Boulevard was closed for several hours as officers reconstructed the scene.

No witnesses to the exact moment of impact have publicly come forward, but neighbors described the aftermath as chaotic. "It happened so fast," one resident near the intersection recounted to local media, recalling the sounds of screeching tires and urgent calls for help. First responders performed lifesaving measures at the scene before transporting Gerety to the hospital, where efforts continued unsuccessfully in the operating room.

Ramos-Caballero was not charged in connection with the crash, which remains under investigation. However, a routine records check revealed an outstanding federal warrant for failure to appear, leading U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to take him into custody at the scene. He was booked into Elmore County Jail.

The tragedy has reverberated through Boise's tight-knit North End community. By Wednesday, a makeshift memorial had formed at the intersection, adorned with flowers, stuffed animals, ribbons, handwritten cards and chalk messages reading "We love you, Mora" and "Safer streets now." Gerety's family, joined by friends and classmates, held a private vigil Saturday afternoon, shutting down the boulevard for a symbolic walk across the intersection and crafting friendship bracelets in her honor at a nearby park. That evening, hundreds gathered for a candlelight vigil, releasing balloons and sharing stories of the shy, sweet girl known for her love of drawing and theater at the nearby TRICA arts center.

"Our hearts are with the student's family, friends, classmates, and the entire Washington community during this incredibly difficult time," the Boise School District said in a statement, announcing grief counselors for students and staff. "In moments like this, we are reminded of the vulnerability of the young people we serve and of the shared responsibility we all hold in keeping students safe."

Boise Mayor Lauren McLean echoed the sentiment, saying, "This week we mourn the loss of a young Boise child who was hit and killed on Harrison Boulevard. My heart goes out to her parents and family, her friends and all who knew her." She pledged renewed efforts for safer streets, adding, "I'm committed to doing all we can to achieve this vision" of children freely exploring their neighborhoods.

U.S. Rep. Russ Fulcher, R-Idaho, also offered condolences: "My heart breaks for the family of the Boise elementary school student involved in a fatal accident while crossing the street. Please join me in lifting this family and our community up in prayer during this time of unimaginable grief."

The Gerety family requested donations in Mora's name to TRICA and the Children's School, forgoing flowers. As the investigation continues, locals have called for better lighting, marked crosswalks and traffic calming measures at the intersection, a route frequented by schoolchildren.
