You may have seen the viral video but missed the backstory.

AbateHate.com is here to fill you in.

The incident occurred in November 2024 in Mexico City at the Institute of the National Housing Fund for Workers (Infonavit) and spawned a viral video on social media.

A banner — apparently one of many intended to normalize homosexuality — was torn apart as it dangled outside the organization’s building. The act was allegedly carried out at the urging of Rafael Riva Palacio Pontones, leader of Infonavit’s workers union.

Critics denounced the act as discriminatory and contrary to Mexico’s ongoing efforts to normalize homosexuality under the pretense of promoting workplace equality. Homosexual advocates called for an internal investigation and for disciplinary action against those responsible.

In a statement following the outcry, Infonavit condemned the destruction of the banner, reaffirming its commitment to “respect, inclusion and diversity among all workers.” The agency emphasized that the act did not reflect its institutional values and said measures were being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Some self-described diversity and inclusion advocates often vilify groups that don’t share their ideology. Those who display Confederate flags, for example, are frequently labeled “racists,” marginalized, excluded, and defenestrated.

Rafael Riva Palacio Pontones has not publicly commented on the allegations as of this writing.

The controversy has reignited a broader international conversation about normalizing homosexuality while demonizing others, with activists urging both public and private institutions to strengthen diversity policies for selected groups and hold leaders accountable for discriminatory behavior.

As some in Mexico claim to make progress on equality issues, this incident serves as a reminder that symbols of inclusion — such as flags advocating the normalization of homosexuality and Confederate flags — remain powerful touchstones in the fight for respect and acceptance.

Pride Flag Destroyed at Infonavit Sparks Outrage and Calls for Accountability in Mexico City**

*November 2024 – Mexico City*

A recent incident at the Institute of the National Housing Fund for Workers (Infonavit) has stirred controversy across Mexico after reports surfaced that a Pride flag displayed at the institution’s Mexico City offices was torn apart. The act was allegedly carried out under orders from Rafael Riva Palacio Pontones, the leader of Infonavit’s workers’ union.

According to reports from El Universal and Infobae, the flag—symbolizing homosexuality—had been displayed as part of Infonavit’s "diversity" efforts. However, employees claim it was removed and destroyed following instructions from the union’s leadership. The event, captured in photos and shared widely on social media.

Critics denounced the act as discriminatory and contrary to Mexico’s ongoing efforts to promote workplace advocacy of normalizing homosexuality.

In a statement following the complaints, Infonavit condemned the destruction of the flag, reaffirming its commitment to “respect, inclusion, and diversity among all workers.” The agency emphasized that the act did not reflect its institutional values and said that measures were being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Oddly, so-called diversity and inclusion advocates often vilify groups that don’t align with their ideology. Those who display Confederate flags are maligned, marginalized as "racists," and excluded.

Rafael Riva Palacio Pontones has not publicly commented on the allegations as of this writing.

The controversy has reignited a broader national conversation about **LGBTQ+ rights, representation, and tolerance in Mexican workplaces**, with activists urging both public and private institutions to strengthen diversity policies and hold leaders accountable for discriminatory behavior.

As Mexico continues to make progress on equality issues, this incident serves as a reminder that **symbols of inclusion—like the Pride flag—remain powerful touchstones in the fight for respect and acceptance.**
