TOLEDO, Ohio — Authorities have charged two suspects in the robbery-turned-homicide that claimed the life of a 70-year-old man in his north Toledo home, marking another violent death in the city this year.

Scott Hirschfield was discovered with at least one gunshot wound inside his residence on North Ontario Street, between Elm and Chestnut streets, shortly after 7 p.m. on Dec. 12, police reported. Responding officers provided immediate aid and rushed him to St. Vincent's hospital, but he died from his injuries soon after arrival.

Detectives quickly classified the shooting as part of a robbery gone wrong, based on initial evidence at the scene. Court documents later revealed that suspects Marcus Vice, 21, and Tywone White, 35, allegedly entered Hirschfield's home that evening with intent to steal. According to prosecutors, Vice fired the shots that killed the victim, after which both men escaped on foot.

Surveillance video from the area captured the pair approaching and leaving the property, investigators said. A witness also provided information that corroborated the footage, helping police build their case.

Vice and White were taken into custody on Dec. 15 following a swift investigation. They appeared in Lucas County Common Pleas Court the next day, where they entered not guilty pleas to preliminary charges.

A grand jury reviewed the evidence and issued indictments on Dec. 20. Each man now faces one count of aggravated murder with a three-year firearm specification, two counts of murder, one count of aggravated robbery and one count of felonious assault. Bonds were set at $1 million apiece, reflecting the severity of the offenses.

The case has drawn attention in the Vistula neighborhood, known for its historic homes and tight-knit community. Residents described Hirschfield as a quiet retiree who kept to himself, expressing dismay at the brazen intrusion. Police noted this incident as the 36th homicide in Toledo for 2025, a figure that aligns with the previous year's total at this point but raises ongoing concerns about urban crime rates.

Authorities urged anyone with additional details to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously. The suspects' arraignment on the full indictment is scheduled for Dec. 30, with trials expected to follow in the new year.
