BEND, Ore. — October 15, 2026 — A deadly shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, claimed the lives of three children and a teacher Thursday afternoon after a 16-year-old armed with a long gun forced his way into the building and opened fire.
The attack at Silver Rail Elementary School ended when a person who witnessed the teenager entering the school followed him inside and shot him, according to police. The suspected gunman also died.
Authorities have not publicly identified the teenager or established a motive for the attack.
Gunfire reported before the school was breached
The first emergency call came at approximately 12:59 p.m. A person outside the school reported being shot at by someone carrying a long gun, according to Bend police.
Additional 911 calls soon reported that an armed individual had entered the school and begun firing. Investigators said the teenager gained access by shooting at locked doors.
Police officers arrived at approximately 1:02 p.m. By then, the suspect had been shot and was reported down inside the building.
Police Chief Mike Krantz said a person who saw the teenager enter the school pursued him into the building and confronted him. Authorities credited that intervention with ending the immediate threat, although the investigation into the precise sequence of events remains ongoing.
Children and teacher among the victims
Three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, were killed, along with a 54-year-old teacher, authorities said. Another child, age 7, and a second teacher were critically injured and taken to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend for treatment.
Officials had not released the victims' names in the initial reports. The investigation continued as authorities worked to establish a fuller account of the shooting.
Silver Rail Elementary serves more than 400 students. The incident prompted a substantial emergency response involving local law enforcement and other agencies.
