COLUMBUS, Ohio (DailyKenn.com) — Man Killed in Shooting During Botched Drug Purchase; Suspect Faces Murder Charge

A routine attempt to buy drugs escalated into a fatal confrontation on Columbus' west side, resulting in the death of a 34-year-old man and murder charges against a younger resident, authorities announced.

Lane Michael Allen, of Radnor in Delaware County, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds Sunday evening after an encounter at a Prairie Township apartment complex, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office and court records.

The events began shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 25, when Allen and his girlfriend drove to the 4600 block of Hilton Avenue to acquire narcotics, deputies said. They approached an apartment where 21-year-old Tyriq Jeffers resided.

Jeffers opened the door and lifted his shirt to reveal a handgun with a black grip and chrome slide, sparking a heated verbal exchange with Allen, investigators reported based on the girlfriend's statement.

The dispute quickly turned physical, prompting Allen and his girlfriend to flee toward their parked car. Jeffers gave chase, firing several rounds from the handgun and hitting Allen repeatedly in the back, the girlfriend recounted to detectives.

She immediately dialed 911, alerting dispatchers to the gunfire and identifying the apartment where the suspect retreated. Responding deputies arrived within minutes and discovered Allen lying wounded on the ground.

Emergency personnel transported him to OhioHealth Doctors Hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he was declared dead at 8:13 p.m., the Franklin County Coroner's Office confirmed.

Sheriff's detectives, assisted by agents from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, secured the scene and executed a search warrant on the apartment. They recovered blood evidence and Jeffers' state identification card, bolstering the case, officials noted.

Jeffers initially evaded capture but was located and arrested without incident at a Columbus hotel on Jan. 27. He was booked into the Franklin County Jail and formally charged with murder.

During his arraignment the following day, Municipal Court Judge Jim O'Grady imposed a $3 million bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 6, with prosecutors indicating more charges could be forthcoming as the probe continues.

The girlfriend's eyewitness testimony proved pivotal, providing a clear sequence of the chase and shooting, according to charging documents.

Authorities urged anyone with additional details to contact the sheriff's detective bureau at 614-525-3351, emphasizing the need to address drug-fueled violence in the community.

This incident marks one of the early homicides in Franklin County for 2026, following a year where Columbus saw a notable decline in such crimes, dropping to 84 in 2025—a 33% reduction from the prior year, law enforcement data shows.

Residents in the Lincoln Village neighborhood, known for its suburban calm, have voiced concerns about rising safety issues tied to illicit transactions, though officials stressed this appears isolated.

The sheriff's office highlighted ongoing initiatives to combat narcotics distribution in the area, aiming to prevent similar tragedies.
