MILTON, Fla. (DailyKenn.com) — A young man died from a gunshot wound in the early hours of a weekend gathering at a residence here, prompting authorities to arrest his friend on manslaughter charges after investigators concluded the firearm discharged accidentally during handling.

Tyler James Caraway-Appleby, 21, of Milton, was found deceased at a home on Galahad Trail shortly after deputies responded to a shooting report around 2:50 a.m. on January 10, 2026. Santa Rosa County Sheriff's deputies arrived to discover him with a gunshot wound to the cheek, lying near a living room couch. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident took place inside the residence where several individuals, including the victim and suspect, had been socializing.

According to the sheriff's office, eyewitness statements and scene evidence showed that Cameron Rayshaun Keys, 22, also of Milton, was holding the firearm when it fired, striking Caraway-Appleby. Deputies obtained Ring doorbell video footage from the homeowner that captured the moment, depicting four people on an L-shaped couch, three of whom were handling guns. The recording reportedly shows the discharge that fatally wounded Caraway-Appleby. Keys reportedly described the event as accidental, claiming he and the victim—whom he referred to as his best friend—were playing with firearms when the tragedy occurred.

No other injuries were reported. Deputies arrested Keys later that day without incident and booked him into the Santa Rosa County Jail on a manslaughter charge. He remains in custody as the case proceeds.

Community members in this northwest Florida town expressed shock and sorrow over the preventable loss. Friends and acquaintances described Caraway-Appleby as outgoing and well-liked, with one neighbor noting the close bond he shared with Keys prior to the incident. "It's devastating to lose someone so young over something that never should have happened," the neighbor said, urging caution with firearms. Local officials highlighted ongoing concerns about unsafe gun handling in private settings, with calls for greater awareness and responsibility among young adults.

The sheriff's office credited prompt reporting and video evidence for clarifying the circumstances quickly, allowing charges to be filed swiftly. As the investigation continues, authorities encouraged anyone with additional information to contact them.
