Confirmation bias, the tendency to find what we're looking for, seems inherent to humans. Those who studied debate in school know that one can find a "study" to support most anything.

And so, it was with a bit of trepidation that I launched an internet search regarding European links to the great pyramid builders of ancient Egypt.

The outcome seems conclusive: Ancient Egyptians were more closely related to Europeans than modern Egyptians. Then, again, maybe it's confirmation bias. I want to be objective, but one's unconscious mind may be looking for a preconceived conclusion.

I'll let you decide.

Full Genome Sequences and Mitochondrial DNA

Genetic research has illuminated surprising connections between the inhabitants of ancient Egypt and populations in Europe, challenging long-held assumptions about the region's demographic continuity.

A groundbreaking study of DNA extracted from mummified remains, it turns out,  indicates that people living along the Nile thousands of years ago exhibited genetic profiles more akin to those of ancient Europeans and Near Easterners than to today's Egyptian. Researchers analyzed full genome sequences from three mummies and mitochondrial DNA from 90 others, spanning a period from about 1400 B.C. to A.D. 400, according to the findings published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Ancestry Ties to the Near East and Beyond

The genetic data positions ancient Egyptians as sharing more heritage with Neolithic and Bronze Age groups from the Levant, Anatolia and Europe than with contemporary Egyptian populations, scientists reported. This alignment stems from shared ancestral components that trace back to early farming communities in those regions, rather than significant sub-Saharan African influences evident in modern samples.

Experts attribute the shift in today's Egyptian genetics to later migrations and interactions, including an estimated 8% increase in sub-Saharan African ancestry that occurred primarily after the Roman era. "The mummies' closest ancient relatives were found in the Near East and Europe," noted one analysis of the results, highlighting how modern Egyptians incorporate a broader mix from sub-Saharan sources.

That suggests that mating with black Africans, likely slaves, was a precursor, if not a contributing cause, to the decline of the Egyptian empire that transcended millennia. If true, it also serves as a harbinger for the rapid decline of Western nations that were built upon the ingenuity of indigenous white Europeans.

According to datapandas.org, the estimated average IQ of Egyptians is 76.32, fewer than seven points above the threshold for intellectual disability (formerly "mental retardation") [source], and ranking 142nd in global comparisons.

By the way, I sometimes make mistakes. If you see some notable omission or error, let me know in the comments.

Implications for Historical Narratives

This evidence upends earlier theories that anticipated greater European influence in Egypt over time. Instead, the opposite pattern emerged, with ancient profiles clustering nearer to European and Turkish mainland ancestries than to present-day Africans south of the Sahara. Such findings underscore Egypt's role as a crossroads of human movement, blending North African roots with inputs from Asia and Europe long before extensive sub-Saharan admixtures.

Note the study focused on a specific archaeological site in northern Egypt, limiting its scope to potentially unrepresentative samples, it provides a baseline for understanding demographic changes driven by trade, conquest and mobility along the Mediterranean. More research is needed.

Still, the evidence is there.

Broader Genetic Context

Comparative analyses show modern Egyptians as genetically distinct, I learned, with additional layers from European and sub-Saharan groups that place them closer to a global average than many isolated populations. I would consider them a sub-race or distinct ethnic group along with other Middle easterners (or, Asians, to use the British vernacular). This evolution reflects Egypt's history of absorbing diverse peoples, from refugees to invaders, as described by molecular genetics specialists involved in related projects.

It occurs to me that inbreeding and out-breeding both have negative consequences. For this reason, I worry about the future of Orania, South Africa, and other closed, close-knit white communities.

The research also cautions against overgeneralizing, as mitochondrial and Y-chromosome data reveal persistent old African lineages alongside later Near Eastern and European assimilation in both ancient and modern contexts.

Conclusion

If we could transverse time and meet the architects of The Great Pyramid in Giza, Egypt c. 2600 BC, would we be greeted blond-haired, blue-eyed Egyptians? I don't know. But I'm reasonably certain they would have IQs significantly above 76.32.
