PERRY, Fla. — A local man has been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting at a convenience store that claimed the life of a 28-year-old resident, authorities announced.

Austin Shane Wilkinson was pronounced dead at the scene early Saturday after sustaining gunshot wounds during an altercation at Choo Choo's Convenience Store on South Byron Butler Parkway, according to Perry Police Department officials. The incident occurred around 2 a.m., prompting a swift response from officers who arrived to find Wilkinson unresponsive.

Investigators identified Ulysses Woodfaulk Jr., 48, also known locally as "J.R.," as the primary suspect shortly after the event. Police reported that Woodfaulk, described as missing one eye and considered armed and extremely dangerous, allegedly fired the shots before fleeing on foot with a handgun. Authorities issued warrants for first-degree murder while armed and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

In the hours following the shooting, law enforcement urged the public to avoid contact with Woodfaulk and to report any sightings immediately. By Monday, officials had announced a $1,000 reward for tips leading to his capture, emphasizing the seriousness of the case for the small community's police force.

Witnesses at the store described a chaotic scene, with one telling investigators that the confrontation escalated quickly from a verbal exchange to gunfire, as detailed in police reports. Another bystander recounted hearing shots and seeing a man matching Woodfaulk's description running from the area, though no one pursued him due to safety concerns.

Woodfaulk surrendered to authorities on Tuesday, ending a brief manhunt and bringing some measure of relief to residents. He remains in custody pending further proceedings, police confirmed.

The tragedy has rattled Perry, a tight-knit town in Taylor County where such violence is rare. Community members expressed sorrow over Wilkinson's death, remembering him as an outdoors enthusiast fond of fishing and rural adventures. Friends and family gathered for a visitation Thursday evening, with funeral services set for Saturday at a local chapel.

Local leaders called for unity in the wake of the loss, noting the impact on families and the broader sense of security. Authorities continue to investigate motives, but no additional suspects have been named.
