MADISON, Wis. — A 61-year-old housekeeping supervisor from Cottage Grove was shot and killed while walking to her job at a downtown Madison hotel, authorities said, in what police described as a targeted attack by a woman she once worked with.

Christine A. Jones was found lying on the ground inside a public parking ramp in the 300 block of West Washington Avenue shortly before 8 a.m. on March 22. A hotel employee discovered her and called police. Paramedics performed life-saving efforts at the scene, but Jones was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined she died from a single gunshot wound that entered her mid-back and exited through her abdomen.

Investigators quickly focused on Diamond Wallace, 31, a former coworker at the same hotel. Wallace had been fired from the position in April 2025. Court records indicate Wallace slashed Jones’ tires around the time of the termination and had repeatedly returned to the hotel area afterward while making threats. The complaint also states Wallace had accused Jones of being racist and expressed hostility toward her specifically because Jones supported President Donald Trump.

Police arrested Wallace the following day outside an apartment on Milwaukee Street. Officers recovered a handgun from the residence, and ballistics testing linked it to shell casings found at the shooting scene and another related location, according to the complaint. Detectives reviewed city surveillance video as part of the investigation, which they said confirmed the shooting was not random.

Wallace faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. A court commissioner set bond at $2 million during Wallace’s initial court appearance. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 1.

Jones, who lived in Cottage Grove, was heading to her shift as a housekeeping supervisor when she was killed.
