Click ▲ to see larger imageI first became aware of Joe Biden in 1991 during the Clarence Thomas nomination hearings. Thomas, a Black Panther ally turned conservative, was being roasted by the slick and merciless senator from Delaware.
Biden tried to destroy the reputation of Thomas by exposing an alleged lurid encounter he had with Anita Hill. Thomas denied the accusations.
But what about Biden? What skeletons still remain in his closet?
Let's crack open the door, turn on the light, and have a look.

1. The Early Days of Joe and Jill Biden’s Relationship
During the mid-1970s, the personal life of then-Senator Joe Biden intersected with controversy surrounding his future wife, Jill, who was previously married to Delaware businessman Bill Stevenson. Stevenson has publicly alleged that the relationship between Joe Biden and Jill began while she was still wed to him, challenging the long-standing account that the pair first connected on a blind date in 1975. According to Stevenson, the situation involved an extramarital affair, leading Jill to seek a divorce in which she pursued ownership of their shared home. He contested the property settlement, citing adultery as a key factor, and ultimately prevailed in the proceedings.
2. Allegations of Intimidation and Tax Charges
Stevenson later claimed that Frank Biden, the senator’s brother, confronted him personally and warned that failing to relinquish the house would lead to significant difficulties. In his own words, Stevenson recalled responding by asking whether he was being threatened. Roughly two months afterward, he and his brother faced federal tax-related charges involving a relatively modest sum of unpaid taxes. Stevenson has suggested the indictment stemmed from political influence rather than standard enforcement, drawing a parallel to later tax cases involving Hunter Biden that were handled by authorities appointed during the Obama and Clinton eras. Critics have pointed to this episode as an early example of potential misuse of government resources for personal matters, a theme that would surface in additional scrutiny years later.
3. Opposition to School Busing Policies
Separately, in the arena of education policy during the same period, Biden emerged as a vocal critic of mandatory busing programs designed to integrate public schools by race. His stance aligned closely with the views of many constituents in Delaware, who resisted the policy. This widespread pushback across the country contributed to a broader retreat from aggressive school desegregation efforts within the Democratic Party. Biden expressed concerns that such forced integration could create unstable environments for children, famously stating he did not want his own kids to grow up in what he described as a racial jungle. While he resisted a full constitutional ban on busing when it applied only to certain regions like the South, his opposition reflected the priorities of his affluent supporters in his home state. In my view, Biden was right to oppose forced school busing, though his motives remain questionable."
4. Mentorship from a Controversial Senator
Biden has also spoken warmly of his early guidance in the Senate from West Virginia Senator Robert C. Byrd, a figure who had a documented history as a recruiter for the Ku Klux Klan and who opposed major civil rights legislation in the 1960s, including filibusters against the Voting Rights Act and Civil Rights Act during the Lyndon B. Johnson presidency. Biden referred to Byrd as a mentor and friend, highlighting the complex alliances that shaped his career in Washington.
