AKRON, Ohio — A Twinsburg firefighter fatally shot his fiancée in their Akron home early Thursday before killing himself in an apparent murder-suicide, police said.
Olivia “Liv” Hamey, 35, a social worker at Aultman Hospital, died from multiple gunshot wounds in the basement of her residence in the 600 block of Brittain Road in the Goodyear Heights neighborhood. Her fiancé, 35-year-old Demetrius T’Juan Butler, a firefighter and former paramedic with the Twinsburg Fire Department, died later at Summa Akron City Hospital after shooting himself once in the chest.
According to police, the couple had been arguing in the home shortly before 2 a.m. on April 11. Hamey’s 11-year-old daughter, who was upstairs with her 7-year-old brother, told a 911 dispatcher she heard gunshots after the dispute and found her mother unresponsive in the basement. The girl reported that Butler had shot her mother several times before leaving the scene in a black Jeep.
Butler drove about five miles to his mother’s house in East Akron. His mother later called 911 after he phoned her and admitted to killing Hamey, authorities said. Officers found Butler standing in the driveway with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Hamey suffered multiple gunshot wounds and Butler died from a single shot to the chest. The couple had been engaged since December 2017 and had planned to marry the following year. Hamey’s two children were initially taken into custody by Summit County Children Services and later placed with their father.
No charges were filed in the case because both individuals died at the scene of their respective shootings. Police described the deaths as a murder-suicide.
Hamey had previously worked as a bartender at Pegasus Pub in Akron while saving to buy a home. Butler had been recognized earlier in his career as co-paramedic of the year in Stark County.
The incident left two young children without their mother.
