Misty Rose Williams, 40, of Dunbar, was found slumped over in the driver’s seat with a single gunshot wound to the chest. She had stepped out for what should have been a quick 20-minute break around 9 a.m. and never returned. Coworkers grew concerned after more than an hour, checked on her, and discovered her body.

Here’s how it unfolded, according to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office and Nitro police. Surveillance video from inside and outside the store captured Eric Dewayne Richmond, 54, of Charleston — the father of Williams’ children and someone she had an on-again, off-again relationship with — walking through the Walmart earlier that morning. He then left the store and went directly to her car while she was on break.

The footage shows the vehicle suddenly lurch forward and slam into another parked car. Richmond is seen getting in and out of both the driver’s and passenger sides multiple times. Williams was never seen leaving the vehicle. He fled the scene in a black pickup truck. A 9mm handgun was later recovered from his residence during a search.

Sgt. Jeremy Burns with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department put it plainly: “I believe they get a 20-minute break and she didn’t return — it had been over an hour.”

Investigators reviewed the video, interviewed witnesses, and identified Richmond quickly. He was arrested, charged with first-degree murder, arraigned Monday evening in Kanawha County Magistrate Court, and is being held without bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 20.

This was no random parking-lot crime. It was a targeted shooting involving two people who shared children and a complicated history. Police say the evidence — especially that clear surveillance footage — left little doubt about what happened.
