FORT WORTH, Texas — A shift at a local fast-food spot ended in tragedy for one family when a 31-year-old man with an intellectual disability never made it home. Thomas King, a dedicated father known for his gentle nature, was shot and killed allegedly by a coworker who then took his car, authorities say.

King clocked in at the Taco Casa on Bridgewood Drive on April 13, 2026, just like any other day. Colleagues later told investigators he had finished his duties and left the restaurant area. Surveillance footage and witness accounts helped police piece together what happened next: King was lured behind the building, where 34-year-old Gregory D. Lewis allegedly shot him. Lewis then dragged the body into nearby woods in east Fort Worth, police reports indicate.

The next day, April 14, officers located King's body in a field. Detectives arrested Lewis on unrelated charges shortly afterward. During questioning, he confessed to the killing and admitted stealing King's Hyundai Sonata, according to Fort Worth police. Lewis now faces capital murder charges, along with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and a parole violation.

Family members remember King as someone who trusted easily and worked hard to support his two children despite challenges. "He had a kind heart," relatives shared, noting he faced bullying at work because of his speech impediment and limited mental faculties. They described him as the sweetest person who simply wanted to provide for his loved ones.

The case has shaken the community, highlighting vulnerabilities faced by people with disabilities in everyday workplaces. Coworkers and neighbors expressed shock that a routine job could turn deadly. King's relatives gathered near the site where his body was found to release balloons in his memory, turning a patch of ground into a makeshift memorial.

Police continue to investigate the full circumstances, including any prior interactions between the men. No bond has been set for Lewis as the case moves through the courts.
