The Chinese government has been ruthlessly suppressing Islam.
As a conservatarian, my libertarian mindset opposes Islam due to its authoritarianism. Squashing Islam fits well into that perspective.
On the other hand, forcing Muslims into deprogramming camps is also authoritarian. If a government can oppress Islam, it can also oppress Christianity and non-religious ideologues.
So what have the Chinese been up to? Let's have a look.

In the remote Xinjiang region of northwestern China, authorities launched one of the largest-scale detentions of a religious minority in the modern era beginning in 2017.
Over the following two years, Chinese officials sent an estimated 1 million to 2 million Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and other predominantly Muslim ethnic groups into a sprawling network of internment facilities. Satellite images, government documents, and accounts from former detainees reveal tightly controlled centers ringed by high walls, watchtowers, and barbed wire.
Daily Life Inside the Facilities
Life inside these camps followed a rigid schedule aimed at erasing religious identity. That's thought reform. Again, if they can do it to Muslims, they can do it to Christians.
Detainees attended mandatory classes in Mandarin language and Communist Party ideology. Many former prisoners report being forced to eat pork and drink alcohol — both strictly forbidden in Islam — as a deliberate tactic to break their faith. Authorities often punished those who resisted. Chinese officials described the program as vocational training and deradicalization, but internal documents portrayed ordinary Islamic practices as an ideological “infection” that required a clinical “cure.” That's hard to argue with.
Children Taken from Families
The campaign reached far beyond adults.
Roughly 500,000 children — many of them sons and daughters of detainees — were placed in state-run boarding schools and orphanages. Separated from their families, they received intensive instruction in Han Chinese language and culture, with only limited contact allowed with relatives. Experts see this separation as a systematic effort to reshape the next generation’s identity.
From Camps to Continued Control
By 2019, many large internment facilities began transitioning detainees into prisons or factory labor programs. However, pervasive surveillance, religious restrictions, and cultural pressure remain widespread across Xinjiang today. The United Nations and multiple human rights groups have documented patterns of arbitrary detention, forced labor, and cultural erasure that some legal scholars classify as crimes against humanity. (It’s striking that cultural erasure is being imposed on White Western nations — and that many so-called human rights organizations appear to cheer it on.)
China’s Defense and the Evidence
China insists its policies are necessary for stability and economic progress following earlier violence in the region, and they probably right. But does that justify it?
Independent investigations — including the Xinjiang Police Files containing hundreds of thousands of detainee photographs — present a picture of coordinated pressure applied to an entire ethnic and religious community.
The Xinjiang program remains one of the clearest modern examples of a state using technology, bureaucracy, and coercion to enforce mass assimilation.
