Cayuga Heights, N.Y. — A promising young woman who stood on the brink of high school graduation died violently in her own home. Breanne Stacy Keane, 19, was fatally stabbed on Saturday, May 23, 2026, in Cayuga Heights, a village near Ithaca and Cornell University.

Keane, a senior at Lehman Alternative Community School who was scheduled to receive her diploma in June, had deep roots in the region. Born in Syracuse, she had built a life in the Ithaca area and was known for caring for her cat Rusty. Her father described her as a vibrant daughter. Just minutes before the attack, the two shared what would become their final phone conversation.

Authorities say the incident stemmed from a disagreement with a man Keane knew. Around 2 p.m. that Saturday, officers responded to reports of a stabbing at her apartment. Emergency responders found Keane seriously wounded. Paramedics performed life-saving measures at the scene and continued them during transport to a nearby trauma center. She did not survive the journey.

Police quickly identified and arrested Damian Stewart, 20, of Ithaca, at the location. Officers charged him with second-degree murder. He remains in custody at the Tompkins County Jail as the investigation proceeds. Cayuga Heights Police Chief Jerry Wright confirmed Stewart as the sole suspect.

This case highlights the sudden risks that can arise from associating with the wrong individuals. For many young adults navigating independence—balancing school, relationships, and future plans—such moments serve as a stark reminder to prioritize safety and trust instincts. Keane’s story, in particular, touches on the challenges of online connections that move into real life, a common experience for her generation that sometimes carries hidden dangers.

Friends and loved ones remember Keane as someone full of potential, eager for the next chapter after graduation. Her death cuts short dreams that were just beginning to take shape. As the legal process moves forward, the focus remains on justice for a young life taken far too soon.
