OAKLAND, Calif. — In the heart of the Bay Area's healthcare community, few names stood out quite like Lartey Solomon's. The 33-year-old registered nurse brought both skilled care to patients and straightforward medical guidance to thousands online, until an attempted robbery in downtown Oakland ended his life on May 31.

Solomon, who worked at Kindred Hospital in San Leandro, earned recognition far beyond hospital walls. Known to followers as "Nurse Solomon," he built a sizable audience on TikTok and YouTube by posting clear, no-cost advice on everyday health topics. Colleagues and family described him as someone who viewed nursing as a true vocation, not just a job. He earned his degree from Samuel Merritt University and previously contributed at facilities including the Alameda Healthcare and Wellness Center.

Originally from Ghana, Solomon moved to the United States and poured his energy into helping others. He balanced demanding shifts with fatherhood, centering much of his world around his 11-year-old daughter. Those closest to him recall a jovial man who stayed generous with his time, whether answering questions at work or creating content that made medical information accessible to people who might otherwise go without it.

We're waiting to hear from Black Lives Matter.

The incident occurred in the early morning hours as Solomon and a friend headed toward their vehicle after leaving a club. According to family accounts, another man approached, complimented Solomon's chain, and then demanded it. Solomon reportedly prepared to hand it over when shots were fired. Authorities later charged 39-year-old Shacory Carnell Daniels with felony murder and related counts in connection with the case.

Friends and coworkers have highlighted Solomon's dedication in the days since. He didn't just treat symptoms in a clinical setting; he worked to empower people with knowledge that could improve their daily lives. His online presence turned complex topics into digestible tips, helping bridge gaps for viewers navigating health decisions on their own.

A GoFundMe effort now supports funeral arrangements and brings Solomon's young daughter and father from Ghana for services. The campaign speaks to the wide circle he touched, from bedside care in California hospitals to virtual followers seeking reliable information.

Solomon's story underscores the unpredictable risks even dedicated black professionals face outside their calling. In the Bay Area, where healthcare workers form a vital backbone for communities, his absence leaves a noticeable gap. Those who knew him best remember a man who chose healing as his path and followed it with consistent heart and effort. His contributions, both in person and through screens, continue to resonate even as loved ones navigate the profound loss.
