A 12-year-old Jacob Freytes ddn't get to live long. The boy’s ordinary afternoon on his bicycle ended in tragedy on July 25, 2026, in the Mount Eden section of the Bronx, New York.
Freytes had just left a local bodega and climbed onto his bike when gunfire erupted nearby. Police say a fight among several adults turned deadly. William Ferrer, 45, allegedly drew a weapon and fired. One of the rounds struck Jacob in the shoulder. The boy ran back inside the store for help, then collapsed. Medics took him to Lincoln Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Two other men suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the same incident. One was hit in the foot and the other in the buttocks. Both remain in stable condition.
Jacob was the son of retired NYPD Sgt. Jesus Freytes. His mother later shared that the boy looked up to his father and hoped to follow the same path into police work one day. Friends and relatives described him as a typical middle-school student who enjoyed simple outings like the one that afternoon.
Officers arrested Ferrer the next day near his home in the Bronx. Authorities charged him with murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, assault and criminal possession of a weapon. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and was ordered held without bail.
Surveillance video captured the sequence of events outside the bodega. Investigators continue to examine the dispute that preceded the shots. Ferrer has a prior arrest record that includes drug and property offenses from earlier years.
The case now moves through the court system in New York. Prosecutors will present evidence linking Ferrer to the shooting that claimed the life of the young bystander. Jacob’s family faces the permanent absence of a child who never reached his 13th birthday.
