NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A routine shopping trip at a Walmart turned deadly last week when a verbal clash over a parking space left a 62-year-old Army veteran dead.

Bart Diguglielmo died after being shot in the abdomen on June 30. His Facebook says he served in the U.S. Army for 16 years and five months, where he served as a combat nurse, medic and tactical communications expert. Witnesses and video captured the two individuals arguing moments before the woman pulled a handgun and fired once.

Diguglielmo had approached the woman during the exchange. She told investigators she acted to protect herself and stayed at the scene, cooperating with authorities. Broward County sheriff’s deputies have not identified her publicly or filed charges as the case heads to prosecutors for review. Images, however, reveal she is black.

Friends and family remember Diguglielmo, who moved to Florida from New Jersey several years ago, as a dedicated father of three who recently reconnected with loved ones. His military service included time as a combat medic.

Authorities continue gathering evidence, including multiple video angles, to determine what led to the fatal moment.
