DURHAM, N.C. — Authorities in North Carolina took two teenagers into custody this week after a premature birth left a newborn in need of emergency care.
Syeisha Jadan Johnson, 18, and Elijah Jshaun Speight, 19, the infant’s father, were arrested Aug. 4. The events that led to the charges began July 29 in Durham, North Carolina.
According to court documents and search warrants, the couple learned in June that Johnson was about 20 weeks pregnant. Investigators say she later ordered the medications mifepristone and misoprostol online from Virginia. She is accused of taking the pills on July 26 in an effort to end the pregnancy.
Three days later, Johnson experienced abdominal pain and sat on a toilet. She gave birth there to a baby at roughly 31 weeks gestation. The infant weighed less than 5.5 pounds. Warrants state the newborn remained in the toilet for several minutes before help arrived.
First responders found the baby with a pulse, performed CPR and transported the child to a hospital for treatment.
Johnson faces charges of assault inflicting serious bodily injury on an unborn child, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and negligent child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury. Speight is charged with negligent child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.
North Carolina law allows abortion up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. The medications involved are typically approved for use much earlier in pregnancy.
The pair appeared in Durham County court shortly after their arrests. A judge set secured bonds of $1,000 for each, noting they had no prior criminal records. Both later posted bail.
The case remains under investigation as the legal process continues.
