FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Early on Aug. 8, 2026, a brief confrontation outside a local nightclub ended with the death of a 27-year-old city resident.
Jacob Gordon Klotz died from multiple gunshot wounds after police and medical teams responded to the scene near Showgirl III just after 3:30 a.m. Officers located him in an adjacent parking lot and began emergency care until paramedics arrived. He was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The Allen County coroner’s office ruled the death a homicide.
According to court documents, the incident began when Austin Rinker, 28, approached a woman who worked at the club. Rinker had previously been banned from the establishment following reports of unwanted contact with the woman. Witnesses described an argument that escalated into a short physical fight involving Klotz. After the exchange, Rinker moved toward a vehicle. Klotz followed. Gunfire rang out moments later, and Klotz fell.
A club manager told investigators he then saw Rinker turn a firearm in the direction of others nearby. The manager returned fire. Rinker, who sustained a gunshot wound, drove himself to a hospital. He has been charged with murder and remains presumed innocent unless proven otherwise in court.
Klotz was not armed, according to statements given to police. Friends later described him as someone who regularly looked out for those around him, including during his time working security at area venues. His death marked the 22nd homicide recorded in Allen County in 2026.
