Three fatally shot in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A Saturday night argument ended with three dead and a former boyfriend facing life in prison.

Vanessa Rheanne DeHerrera, 26, and Scott Bucholz, 29, were killed Aug. 8, 2026, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Police classified the shooting as domestic-violence related. Prosecutors later charged Thomas S. Zollicoffer, 36, with first-degree intentional homicide.

DeHerrera left two young sons. Relatives said she had been trying to leave an on-and-off relationship. Court papers identify Zollicoffer as her former live-in boyfriend. Bucholz, who would have turned 30 in October, was a close friend. Family members said he tried to step in during the dispute.

What police say happened

Officers were called shortly before 10 p.m. Both victims died that night. Several other people were present when the argument turned fatal, according to a criminal complaint.

Detectives tied that shooting to a second killing later the same evening. They named a known suspect and spent the next three days looking for him.

Zollicoffer was arrested Aug. 11 after an hourlong standoff. In an interview the next day, the complaint says, he admitted shooting DeHerrera and Bucholz. He first said he meant only to wound her, then said he “lost it.” He said he shot Bucholz after the two exchanged words.

"Lost it" suggests the shooter struggled with impulsivity.

Those statements remain allegations. Zollicoffer is presumed innocent unless a jury finds him guilty.

The case in court

Prosecutors filed multiple felony counts, including three first-degree intentional homicide charges from that night. Conviction on those homicide counts carries a possible life sentence. A court commissioner set bail at $1 million.

On Aug. 24, the case was bound over for trial. Two other people also face charges for allegedly helping him afterward, including a driver and a relative accused of giving him a place to stay.

A judge later restricted most of Zollicoffer’s jail communications after prosecutors said he tried to pressure a witness. His lawyers have not offered a public defense beyond the presumption of innocence.

What a jury will decide

The public file is short. A mother of two and a friend who tried to intervene were killed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Aug. 8, 2026. Charging documents describe jealousy, an argument, and a confession. A trial is scheduled to test those claims.
