Andrea Mallory, 35, and Brenda Tackett, 54, both from Bristol, Virginia were found dead at a local hotel after police responded to reports of an armed man early Sunday morning.
Authorities have not publicly released a detailed account of the circumstances surrounding each woman's death.
The incident began at about 2:40 a.m. when Bristol Virginia Police received a report involving a man with a firearm. Officers arrived and encountered 47-year-old Antonio Megginson.
According to police, gunfire was exchanged between Megginson and responding officers. Neither Megginson nor the officers was struck during that exchange. Additional law enforcement agencies, including Virginia State Police, were brought in as the situation progressed.
Authorities eventually took Megginson into custody at about 9:04 a.m. He was transported to a medical facility for evaluation following his arrest. Virginia State Police assumed the lead role in the investigation.
Megginson initially faced a felony charge of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. The charges now include two counts of aggravated murder, eight counts of using a firearm during a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, five counts of attempted aggravated murder of a law enforcement officer, shooting in public that caused injury and two counts of brandishing a firearm. He also faces an additional charge from Bristol police.
Investigators have indicated the case may be related to a domestic disturbance. That aspect of the investigation remains under review, and authorities have not released a complete account of what led to the confrontation.
