A late-night call for help in Mobile, Alabama, on Aug. 12 ended with a 61-year-old woman dead and two other people seriously injured. Laurie Ann Gilchrist was identified as the person killed in what police described as a domestic altercation.

Mobile police said officers were dispatched at about 11:16 p.m. Wednesday after a report of a shooting. When they arrived, they found Gilchrist suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. Two additional victims, a man and a woman, were found inside the residence with life-threatening injuries and were taken to a hospital.

The investigation quickly focused on Devin Kelly, 30, of Mobile. Authorities said Kelly was wanted in connection with the shooting and later located him in Greenville, Alabama. He was taken into custody without further incident and returned to Mobile County. ([WAKA 8][2])

According to authorities, investigators determined that the shooting occurred during a domestic confrontation. Kelly is accused of shooting all three victims. The surviving victims were hospitalized for treatment of their injuries.

According to reports from WKRG News 5 and the Mobile County District Attorney, she and Kelly shared two young children together. The children were present inside the home during the August 2026 shooting on Elm Circle but were physically unharmed.

Kelly was booked into Mobile County Metro Jail and faces several serious charges. Court records cited by local news outlets show he was charged with capital murder during a burglary, two counts of attempted murder and first-degree domestic violence.

The case also took investigators beyond Mobile after Kelly left the area. Greenville police became involved after receiving information from U.S. Marshals about his whereabouts. Officers there ultimately detained him while he was traveling through the city.

Gilchrist’s death was later confirmed by the Mobile Police Department, which listed her age as 61. An obituary from Pine Crest Funeral Home states that Laurie Ann Gilchrist was born June 10, 1965, in Mobile and was a resident of the city. It lists Aug. 12, 2026, as the date of her death.

The criminal case against Kelly remains pending. A capital murder charge can carry severe penalties under Alabama law, but the allegations against Kelly have not been proven in court.
