A routine stop at a Toms River, New Jersey, Wawa store ended with the death of 42-year-old Bruce Gress and a murder investigation that has left authorities searching for a suspect.
The victim was white and the suspect is black.
The shooting occurred at about 7:20 a.m. Sept. 18, 2026. Toms River Township police responded after receiving a report that someone had been shot. Officers found Gress suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Emergency medical personnel transported him to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he was pronounced dead.
Suspect identified and charged
Investigators soon focused on 51-year-old Douglas Cobb, a Toms River man whom authorities identified as the person responsible for Gress' death.
Cobb faces a murder charge along with three weapons-related counts: possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon and being a certain person prohibited from possessing a weapon. An arrest warrant has been issued.
As of Sept. 21, Cobb had not been taken into custody and remained a fugitive, according to authorities. Officials said he is also known as Douglas Green and uses the nickname “Bootknock.” Investigators said he was last seen driving a black 2016 Acura MDX with New Jersey registration.
Motive has not been released
The investigation has involved the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Toms River Township Police Department and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
Authorities have not publicly established a motive for the killing. CBS New York reported that the reason for the shooting remained unclear after Cobb was identified as a suspect.
The case remains active as investigators work to locate Cobb. Authorities are asking anyone with credible information about his whereabouts to contact the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit or Toms River Township Police.
