A physician who spent his career caring for critically ill children was killed inside his Pennsylvania home early Thursday, Sept. 24, after police say a man entered the residence and attacked him and his wife while they slept.

Dr. Idris Evans, 46, was pronounced dead at a hospital following the attack in Edgewood, a borough in Allegheny County near Pittsburgh. His wife was also seriously injured and remained hospitalized in critical condition, according to authorities.

Police identify suspect

Allegheny County police identified the suspect as 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway of Pittsburgh. Investigators said Hemingway entered the home shortly after midnight and attacked the couple.

First responders found Evans and his wife suffering from multiple stab wounds. Both were taken to hospitals, but Evans later died. A Monroeville police K-9 unit subsequently helped locate Hemingway behind a nearby home, where authorities said he had cuts on his hand.

Hemingway faces charges including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and criminal trespass. The charges are allegations, and the case will proceed through the Pennsylvania court system.

A career devoted to children

Evans was a pediatric critical care physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and served as an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

His work placed him in a field where physicians routinely care for children facing some of the most serious medical emergencies. UPMC confirmed his position and described him as a dedicated caregiver and valued member of its hospital and university communities.

Police have not publicly established a motive for the attack. Investigators are continuing to examine what led to the confrontation and whether Evans and Hemingway had any previous connection.

For now, the case centers on a devastating loss inside a home and a criminal investigation that has already resulted in homicide charges.
