Sarah Elizabeth Bundy, 44, was found dead in Brooklyn Park, Maryland, on May 23, 2025, beginning a homicide investigation that more than a year later ended with her husband receiving a lengthy prison sentence.
Anne Arundel County police and fire personnel were called shortly after 9 a.m. that morning after a report of a deceased woman. Investigators identified the woman as Bundy and found evidence of significant trauma. Her body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy.
Investigation points to her husband
Detectives soon focused on Cedric Dion Callaway, who was 49 when he was initially charged and is now 51. Callaway was Bundy's husband.
Surveillance footage became an important part of the investigation. According to prosecutors, video showed Bundy with Callaway during the early morning hours before her body was discovered. Additional footage later showed Callaway returning alone to a business where the couple had been seen earlier. Investigators also recovered evidence they said connected him to Bundy.
Callaway initially told police that he and Bundy had been victims of a robbery. Investigators, however, said his physical condition did not match the account he provided. Police also reported finding what appeared to be blood on his hands and beneath his fingernails.
Callaway was charged with Bundy's murder in May 2025.
Guilty plea ends trial
The case remained in the courts for more than a year. On Aug. 13, 2026, Callaway pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on the fourth day of his jury trial. The plea ended the trial before the jury reached a verdict.
On Sept. 15, 2026, Anne Arundel County Circuit Judge Christine Celeste sentenced Callaway to life in prison, with all but 40 years suspended. The sentence formally concluded the prosecution stemming from Bundy's May 2025 death.
Bundy's death remains a case in which a missing-person investigation quickly became a homicide investigation, followed by a lengthy prosecution and, ultimately, a first-degree murder conviction.
