Jesse Carl Monroe II, a 33-year-old black male, is facing a first-degree felony murder charge in the death of a 66-year-old man found fatally injured at a public transit center in Austin, Texas. The killing occurred in the early morning hours of Oct. 6, 2026, and investigators say the victim was attacked while resting near a bus stop.

The case centers on Jeffrey Grable, whose death prompted an Austin Police Department homicide investigation.

Reports say Monroe used a concrete black to bludgeon Grable.

Victim Found by Bus Driver

Police received a report at approximately 5:17 a.m. on Oct. 6 after a Capital Metro bus driver discovered a man lying on the ground with blood around him. Officers arrived and found Grable suffering from apparent traumatic injuries.

Grable was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:34 a.m.

Investigators later determined that Grable had settled down near the bus stop several hours before the fatal encounter. According to police, another man approached him, assaulted him and left the area. Authorities began searching for the person responsible while working to establish what happened before the attack.

Official Austin Police Department statements identify the victim as Jeffrey Grable, a white male born May 2, 1960 (age 66).

Suspect Identified and Arrested

Police identified the suspect as Jesse Carl Monroe II, 33. Following an initial public appeal for information, investigators received information that helped them identify and locate him.

Monroe was arrested on Oct. 8, according to subsequent reporting on the case, and charged with first-degree felony murder. He was taken into custody and held at the Travis County Jail.

Court records cited in news reports indicate that the charge is connected to an alleged assault involving a piece of concrete. Investigators reviewed surveillance footage and other evidence as they worked to reconstruct the events leading to Grable's death.

Authorities have not publicly established a motive for the killing or confirmed whether Monroe and Grable knew each other.

Takeaway

Reports say Jeffrey Grable had settled down near the bus stop several hours before the fatal encounter. That is, he did nothing to provoke the attack, it seems, other than being in harms way. It is for this reason that racial segregation was imposed in public spaces.
