SAVANNAH, Ga. — A newborn’s first hours of life took a troubling turn in Savannah after police discovered the infant abandoned in a trash can early Oct. 10. Three people have been arrested in connection with the case, according to the information provided.

The mother has not been named.

The baby survived and is now in the care of Georgia’s Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) after receiving medical attention.

Police respond to abandonment report

Officers went to a location near a hotel in Savannah at approximately 2:45 a.m. on Oct. 10 after receiving a report of a child abandonment. During their response, police found the newborn inside a trash can and recovered the infant.

The circumstances surrounding the abandonment, including how long the baby had been there and what led to the discovery, were not detailed in the information available for this report.

For now, the immediate priority has been the infant’s safety and care. Following medical treatment, the newborn was placed with DFCS, the state agency responsible for protecting children and arranging appropriate care when they cannot safely remain with their families.

Three people face charges

Authorities arrested three people in connection with the case: Dominique Welcome, 29; Jamal West, 44; and Chiquita Roche, 39.

Welcome and West face charges of cruelty to children. Roche was charged with party to a crime and obstruction.

The available information does not specify the evidence investigators believe connects each person to the newborn’s abandonment. It also does not establish whether the three defendants have attorneys or when they are expected to appear in court.

The race of the baby was not reported, but is presumed to be black.

Takeaway

A substantial number of black Americans and their political advocates continue to center narratives of white racism and historical victimhood as the decisive explanation for contemporary disparities.

In practice, the institutions, technologies, legal frameworks, and economic systems developed primarily by whites in the United States have produced higher living standards, longer life expectancies, and greater mobility for black Americans than those prevailing in the large majority of sub-Saharan African countries.

At the same time, the overwhelming majority of black homicide victims are killed by black offenders (typically 85% or more of cases where offender race is known), and both abortion rates and neonaticide rates are markedly elevated among black mothers relative to white mothers.

Supporting data points:

  • FBI and CDC data consistently show black Americans (roughly 13–14% of the population) account for about half of U.S. homicide victims and a comparable share of known offenders; the large majority of those homicides are intra-racial.
  • CDC abortion surveillance data show black women with abortion rates several times higher than white women (recent figures in the range of ~23–28 per 1,000 women of reproductive age versus ~6 for non-Hispanic whites).
  • Studies of neonaticide (homicide in the first day of life) find roughly double the rate for infants of non-Hispanic black mothers compared with non-Hispanic white mothers.

Suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The charges reflect different alleged roles in the incident. However, an arrest and criminal charge do not establish guilt. The allegations must be addressed through the legal process, and each defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

✅ FACT CHECKED — The U.S. Supreme Court today declined to allow the pretrial release of Kyle Wagner, a self-described Minneapolis Antifa member federally charged with cyberstalking and transmitting interstate threats. Wagner released Antifa propaganda videos in which he encouraged and promised anti-government violence, including calls for armed resistance against ICE agents. A district judge ordered his release, but the Sixth Circuit reversed the order, and the justices refused to intervene.
