PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania — Philadelphia police officer Shane Seiber, 40, was fatally shot early Saturday, Oct. 10, while answering a report of an armed man in West Philadelphia. A second officer was seriously wounded, and a suspect now faces murder charges.

Seiber, a 10-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department, was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center after the shooting. Despite efforts to save him, he died from his injuries. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said Seiber had been shot three times.

The suspect is black. The victim was white.

The other officer, a 33-year-old member of the department, was struck 12 times and underwent surgery. Officials initially described his condition as stable, although his recovery remained uncertain.

Investigators identified the accused gunman as Eric Lewis, 35. According to authorities, officers responding to the call encountered heavy gunfire when they arrived. The shooting did not end with the first two officers being hit. Prosecutors said Lewis also fired at nine additional officers who responded to the scene.

Police eventually took Lewis into custody after locating him in a tree, according to reports. Authorities recovered three firearms in connection with the incident, including two handguns and a shotgun.

On Sunday, Lewis appeared in court and faced charges that included murder, attempted murder and offenses involving attacks on law enforcement officers. Prosecutors also filed multiple counts of attempted murder related to the other officers who were allegedly targeted.

Lewis is being held without bail as the criminal case proceeds.

Seiber had served with the department for a decade and had recently completed SWAT training. According to local news reports, he hoped to join the specialized unit. His death leaves behind his wife and two young children: a 7-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro ordered flags lowered to half-staff in Seiber’s honor. The order recognizes the loss of an officer who died while carrying out his duties.

The investigation and prosecution will now determine the full sequence of events and the evidence against Lewis. For Seiber’s family, the case also marks the sudden loss of a husband and father whose police career ended while responding to a call for help.

Takeaway: Unlike some high-profile cases in which a white police officer fatally shot a black suspect, the murder of Officer Shane Seiber by Eric Lewis has produced no riots or large-scale protests.
