A Kentucky homicide investigation took a major turn after authorities arrested a Tennessee man accused of killing 41-year-old April Barlow Celio in Pineville, Kentucky.
Celio was found dead at her home on Sept. 23, according to the Pineville Police Department and the Bell County Coroner’s Office. Investigators determined that she had been the victim of a homicide.
The case took an especially disturbing turn the following day when investigators learned Celio had been pregnant. The State Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the fetus was no longer in her womb. While authorities continued processing the scene, investigators recovered what they believed to be fetal remains.
Police have not publicly disclosed how Celio died or provided details about how the fetus was removed. They also have not explained what relationship, if any, existed between Celio and the man accused in the case.
Investigators identified DeMarcus Kenneth Johnson-Wright as a suspect. A Bell County District Court judge issued warrants for him on Sept. 25 alleging first-degree robbery and kidnapping of an adult. Additional warrants issued Sept. 30 accuse him of murder involving domestic violence and tampering with physical evidence.
Johnson-Wright was located in Clarksville, Tennessee, more than 250 miles from Pineville. The U.S. Marshals Service assisted Pineville police and the Bell County Sheriff's Office in finding him. Authorities arrested him at a Clarksville residence on Sept. 30 and subsequently searched the home, where officials said they recovered materials related to the investigation.
Johnson-Wright was booked into the Montgomery County Detention Center in Tennessee, where he remains while awaiting extradition to Kentucky. Authorities have described him as having an extensive violent criminal history and several outstanding felony warrants in Tennessee. Those allegations are separate from the charges in Celio's death and do not establish guilt in this case.
Celio was a mother of three and was survived by her husband, Antonio Celio, as well as her parents, children and other family members. Her funeral was held Oct. 5 in Barbourville, Kentucky.
The investigation remains active, and Johnson-Wright is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
