DailyKenn.com — Legislation that will pay reparations to descendants of black slaves in the USA is advancing in the House of Representatives.

Similar bills have been introduced for decades. This is the first time one has gained traction as it moved forward to the House floor to create a commission to study the complex issue.

Given the far-left bent of the current congress, reparations for black descendents of slaves may become a reality before the 2022 elections.

Take aways ...

• What about those who have trace African heritage? Will they be included as if they were wholly black? The same question applies to blacks in the USA, most of whom likely have white ancestry.

• What about slaves who were not black?

• Will Indian nations that allowed slavery be excempt?

• If reparations becomes a reality, what will recipients do with the cash windfall? Will they spend it on products and services from white-owned businesses; effectively transferring their wealth to white Americans?

• Will repartitions end racial conflict? Or will reparations have no more impact on race relations than electing a black president?

Rep. Burgess Owens (R-Utah) described reparations as a “falsehood.”

“Slavery was and still is evil,” said Owens, who is Black. But reparations suggest “Black people are a hapless, hopeless race who never did anything but wait for white people to show up and help us,” he added.

Rep. Tom McClintock (R-Elk Grove) called the measure “evil in its effect if not in its intent,” saying that “the bill is designed to reach into the dead past, revive its conflicts and reintroduce them into our age.”

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) said the measure is not about punishment: “This is about restorative justice. ... If you through your history benefited from that wrong that was done, then you must be willing to commit yourself to righting that wrong.”
