DailyKenn.com —  Elijah Daniel DeWitt was fatally shot at a shopping mall October 5, 2022 in exurban Atlanta.

Arrested were Kemare Bryan, 18, and Chandler Richardson, 19.

Reports say DeWitt's parents filed a civil complaint Friday for damages against Simon Property Group LP, which owns and operates Sugarloaf Mall where DeWitt was gunned down.

The suit apparently contends that the mall should have posted a notice warning visitors that the location was a high crime area or, as we prefer to say, urban jungle.

According to foxnews.com:

The lawsuit alleges defendants knew the premises "was in a high crime area" and seeks an award of "punitive damages without limitation or cap," as well as compensatory damages in an amount to be determined by a fair and reasonable jury for damages suffered, including physical, emotional and economic injuries." That includes for mental anguish, fright shock and terror, funeral and burial expenses and future lost wages and earning capacity making up "all elements of the full value of Elijah DeWitt's life."

DeWitt was a standout high school football player.

Takeaways...

• In the past, Georgia applied Jim Crow laws that mitigated black-on-white crime by imposing racial segregation. The laws were, of course, unfair to law-abiding black people

More recently, shopping malls have addressed the black crime problem by imposing age discrimination. That is, by banning all teens, large groups of black teens are forbidden access to a property. As Jim Crow laws were unfair to law-abiding blacks, age discrimination is unfair to law-abiding teens.

• What if the civil suit prevails?

Shopping malls and other properties will post high-crime warnings to mitigate lawsuits. Jurisdictions, such as municipalities, counties, states, etc., may follow suit. That, of course, will be followed by accusations of racism as virtually all areas frequented by blacks seem to be high crime areas.

Imagine, for example, if cities such as Chicago, St. Louis, Washington, DC, and Atlanta were compelled to post signs in black neighborhoods stating, "Warning: High Crime area."
