Sheikh Yasser al-Habib, a controversial Muslim cleric known for his extremist views and military-style training camps, cited Canada's prime minister's openness to Islamic migration as a reason for choosing a Canadian island to be the home of his new Islamic nation.

Al-Habib is now considering Torsa, another island off the west coast of Scotland. Torsa, part of the Slate Islands, is just over a mile long with one farmhouse and is accessible only by private boat from Luing. It has not been permanently inhabited for more than 50 years. Representatives from al-Habib's group have visited and filmed the island.
Al-Habib has expressed interest in purchasing an island to establish an Islamic state. In a video to his followers, al-Habib, 45, revealed he is in advanced negotiations to buy an island. The plan includes building a school, hospital, and mosque where sharia law will be practiced.
Al-Habib, who sought asylum in Britain 20 years ago after fleeing Kuwait, mentioned that his group had initially considered an island on the border between the United States and Canada. However, they could not afford the $8 million price tag, and a Canadian charity was also competing to buy it.
The exact location of this island remains unclear, but al-Habib indicated an interest in Canada due to its welcoming stance on immigration.
Currently, he preaches to millions from his headquarters in Fulmer, South Buckinghamshire, England.
Sarah Zaaimi, deputy director for communications at the American think tank Atlantic Council, has researched al-Habib and expressed concerns about his plans. She noted that the group's vision challenges sovereignty and questioned how UK authorities could allow fundraising for a sovereign country on the margins of another.
Al-Habib has raised over $3 million of the $3.5 million needed to purchase Torsa. He has described the island as an Islamic "homeland" to prepare for the coming of their messiah, Mahdi. In a video, al-Habib encouraged donations, stating that living under the imam's banner in a special homeland would remind them of the awaited Mahdi. Another video showed his "army," Al-Shurta Al-Khamis, training at his mosque in Fulmer.
Since his arrival in the UK in 2004, al-Habib has been a controversial figure. The government has unsuccessfully tried to shut down his TV channel. Following attacks in Israel on October 7 last year, al-Habib publicly supported retaliation against the Zionist enemy while criticizing Hamas for desecrating bodies and raping women.
In June 2022, al-Habib's film "The Lady Of Heaven" was pulled from Cineworld cinemas and some branches of Vue after protests accused it of blasphemy for depicting the Prophet, which is forbidden in Islam. The cinema chains halted screenings over staff safety concerns, leading to accusations of self-censorship.
